Day 1: Xining – Gonlung (Youningsi) – Repkong (Tongren)
Drive out to Gonlung monastery, one of the four famous monasteries along the northern Tsongchu (Huangshuihe) river. Then drive along the Yellow River to Repkong (Tongren), which is known as the cradle of Tibetan arts.
Day 2: Rebkong
Visit Longwo Monastery (built in the 13th-14th centuries), local Tibetan homes, and the famous thangka painting schools. Visit a few other monasteries and artist families.
Day 3: Repkong – Tsekog grasslands
Driving through a forest valley, you will come upon an open grassland. Set up camp on the grassland.
Day 4: Tsekog grasslands
Experience firsthand the lifestyle of Tibetan nomads. Join nomads herding yak and sheep and making cheese, yogurt, and butter. Try riding a yak. You might fall off, and the nomads might laugh at you, but then they will help you back on.
Day 5: Tsekog grasslands
Spend another day camping with nomads.
Day 6: Tsekog Grasslands – Sogdzong (Henan) Grasslands
Sogdzong, also known as Henan Xian in Chinese, is a Mongolian town heavily influenced by Tibetan culture. Camp alongside Mongolian nomads living in Mongolian yurts.
Day 7: Sogdzong grasslands
Spend another day camping with nomads.
Day 8: Sogdzong – Xining
Drive back to Xining and then fly out.
